Last week there was an excellent programme on BBC Radio 4, part of the series ‘In Our Time’ presented by Melvyn Bragg. It’s available on the BBC iPlayer here, and as a podcast here. It’s in five parts and examines how, when and where writing was developed, and the role it played in the spread of religion, the development of literature and the Enlightenment. It turns out the original use of writing was for accountancy! There are some great pictures on these sites, too, including a manuscript of Beowulf and some of Isaac Newton’s notebooks. Well worth a look and a listen.
